From letter:
Oksana Tretiak (Maxim's mother):
"In our family we have two children. In 2003 our daughter was born – a healthy, long-awaited child. She's now five and a half. To make our family more complete, we decided to bear one more child, and in 2007 our son was born. The birth was without complications and a healthy, strong boy was born. But when he was three months old, we noticed that he often has strange bruises. We turned to our local polyclinic. They could not tell anything certain since there are no hematologists in our city. We were sent for examination to Simferopol, and then for adjustment of diagnosis to Kiev. There we learned our son has a severe form of classic hemophilia (1% of blood coagulation factor VIII). It transpires that only boys are subject to such disease.
An extremely hard time began for us: at the slightest impact our son gets hematomas, internal hemorrhaging that can last for days. To avoid them, we have to maintain the organism by an intravenous injection of blood coagulation factor VIII, and such a preparation is very expensive. In Ukraine, there is no program for providing hemophilia patients with blood coagulation factor; everywhere we are told to "seek a sponsor". City authorities helped us just once, although there are only four hemophilia patients in the whole of Kerch, of which our son is the youngest – he is just 18 months old.
Of course, we try not to lose heart, live and be glad at life. Why, our boy is just wonderful! He is lively, takes interest in everything and gets along with his sister so well… They love each other so much, and play so well together!
If only it wasn’t for our son's disease and the situation with buying the medications for his treatment… We have a very hard time – first we have to find where the medication is sold (it is not always sold), and then think of how we can afford to buy it.
The main thing is that Maxim's illness is not terminal! But for him to live he needs constant (twice weekly) injections of blood coagulation factor VIII. As a disabled child, our son receives a pension of 300 grivnas, which is not enough for even one injection. Another problem is that one family member (his father) has to be always at home because the baby needs minute-by-minute supervision for him not to get hit, not to fall, not to get a hematoma… So it transpires that only one of us can go to work.
Therefore, we appeal to you: if you can help us with anything, we and our children would be very, very grateful to you.
Please, help our son in purchasing blood coagulation factor VIII. His entire life depends on it…"
How You Can help
"To sustain his vital activity, Maxim constantly needs an expensive drug Immunate by Baxter (Austria). The drug is hardly available on the Ukrainian market, it has to be brought from Russia; one injection costs $220-350. Since Maxim's parents have nowhere to expect help from, we appeal to our Charity Fund to lend support to this little boy. Respectfully, Partners from Ukraine".
As Maxim Tretiak's parents wrote us recently, the medication critical for the baby's life is currently not available for sale, and the Kerch hospital cannot provide the child with blood coagulation factor VIII for preventive treatment…
Words fail to describe the state of the parents, who have no opportunity to sustain their son's life. And therefore we appeal to you to lend urgent assistance to a boy who has experienced so much in his short life…
Help save the baby for whom your compassion is the breath of his life. Your help is needed right now, so please act!

Our charity fund has transferred another $300 towards the treatment of the baby.
April 09, 2009
We have transferred another but a little sum of money for Maxim, $300.
“We are grateful to all the partners who are not indifferent to our son’s fate! Maxim’s health has improved a bit but you understand that it all is maintained by medications. The boy is growing up and becoming more active, hence more collisions and more injuries. We hardly ever leave his side, yet children will be children. He is interested in everything everywhere and does not understand that collisions and blows are bad for him. So, we have bruises with hematomas. Only injections help, and we need to make them immediately to prevent dangerous injuries. We have recently been to Lvov where Maxim had an additional two-week examination and treatment. We’ll see the results later. We keep our heads up, grow up, go on living and getting to know the world. Our little boy is a mere wonder! Thanks to the Corporation and all the partners for aid and support! With the greatest regard, Maxim’s parents.”
In December 2008 we transferred $1000 for Maksim. But the boy’s life depends on monthly fund transfers, that is, on your donations. He needs your help to live!
